This Messy, Blessed Life

A homemaker’s reflections on Faith, Scripture, and God's Grace in the Middle of Life's Messes

The Not-So-Glamorous Life of a Texas Realtor

Real estate: because crawling on all fours in 100° heat is apparently part of the job description.

Contrary to what HGTV might lead you to believe, real estate is not all blazers, heels, luxury homes, and sipping lattes at closings.

Nope.

Sometimes? It’s crawling on all fours through a swarm of mosquitoes to unlock a lockbox that a listing agent thought would be “totally fine” to place behind an over grown bush… on a faucet. In July. In Texas.

Sometimes it’s trying to unlock a front door while wasps dive bomb your head because you’re too close to their nest! (Have I mentioned that I am deathly terrified of all flying, stingy things?)

I’ve shown homes that smelled like a crime scene from CSI, complete with mystery stains and “what-is-that-smell” moments that required me to keep a straight face while assuring my sweet buyers that it was “just an old carpet issue.” Or “it may just be the garbage disposal” (It wasn’t. I still don’t know what it was.)

Then there are the keys that don’t work, or missing keys all together! The doors that won’t open. The closets that slam shut mysteriously. All while I smile, sweat, and silently pray, “Lord, please don’t let this be haunted…”

But here’s the truth: I love it.

Because for every awkward moment, there’s a family finding their forever home.
For every funky smell or broken doorknob, there’s laughter and bonding over the weirdest showing ever.
And for every mosquito bite, there’s the reminder that I’m doing something that matters.

Plus…thank the Lord, most people have a good sense of humor and a strong stomach!

So if you’re thinking real estate is all glam… allow me show you a lockbox behind a nosquito bush. 😄

Happy House Hunting!
